Hope at the Feet of Jesus

October 1, 2017 Speaker: Pastor David Lovi Series: The Gospel of Matthew

Passage: Matthew 9:18–9:26

Hope at the Feet of Jesus

Hope at the Feet of Jesus

I would like you to consider for a moment the worst day of your life. For some of you a traumatic memory rushed forth just now and perhaps you want to get rid of it. Why did I come to church today just to be reminded of that day? I ask all of you to recall that day if you can because I want you to peer  through the window with me into the worst day of another man’s life to see what he did with his pain and his sorrow.

If you are particularly young, you may not have faced much adversity in your life yet. But, if there’s one thing I know for certain it’s this: you will. You will face adversity and loss. You will face pain. What you do with that really matters.

The Bible is a real book about real people. It contains the only solution to our real pain. When we come together as a church, as a family of believers, we don’t have to put on a fake smile if we feel sad. Indeed we gather together to worship the One, who has borne our grief and carried our sorrows and so we should  bring them to the Lord. We should bring them to the feet of Jesus and not hide them. In so doing, we may find hope there like the man and the woman we’re going to read about in our passage today.

Christ is the wonderful counselor. That’s what He is called in Isaiah. Christ is the great physician. The one who is able to heal every person who comes to Him. We’ve seen it. Why would we ever go anywhere else with our pain, sorrow, and grief? We should bring them all to Jesus Christ. If we bring Him our anguish and our grief, He will prove himself to be the solution for it. I have found that to be true in my own life.

I know that all you who believe would testify to that fact as well. So, let’s pray now as we peer into the one day in the life . . . the worst day in the life of the man whom we are going to read about today— a man named Jairus.
